Why Futura Looks Smaller Than Helvetica

Set a headline in Futura at 36 point. Set the same headline in Helvetica at 36 point. One of them is going to look almost like a subhead.

Futura looks smaller than Helvetica at the same point size because its lowercase letters sit lower inside the em. Point size measures the invisible square a typeface is drawn inside. It does not measure the letters in that square. Two faces specified at 36 point can differ by around twenty percent in apparent size.

Why does Futura look smaller at the same point size?

Futura is a geometric sans with a small x-height and long ascenders and descenders. Helvetica is a neo-grotesque with a tall x-height and short ones. Both are correct. They were drawn for different jobs.

The number that predicts the difference is x-height as a share of cap height, the same measurement that decides whether type survives at small sizes. In a headline, legibility is not at risk. Apparent size is.

Those ratios are measured, not quoted. Set each face at 100 point, measure the lowercase x up from the baseline, measure the capital H, and divide.

The hierarchy you specified is not the hierarchy on the page

Changing the typeface inside a fixed point size changes the relationships between elements, not only the elements themselves. The spec sheet cannot warn you about that.

A headline at 36 point over body copy at 10 point looks like a 3.6 to 1 relationship written down. Set the headline in a face with a small x-height and the body in a face with a large one, and the contrast the reader actually sees compresses. Every number in the document is correct. The headline has stopped leading.

The effect is invisible in the file and obvious on the wall.

What junior designers do next, and what to do instead

The first instinct is to push the headline up until it looks right. 36 becomes 42, the page recovers, and that works exactly once. In more than thirty years of reviewing work from junior designers, the version I see is a headline or a subhead reading too quiet against its body copy, corrected by raising one number until that spread looks right. The system then inherits a size chosen to fix a symptom on one page. The next spread has a longer headline, the number is wrong again, and nobody can say what the rule was. There was never a rule. There was a patch.

The order that holds:

  1. Choose both typefaces first, before any size is specified.
  2. Set the headline and the body together and adjust by eye until the contrast is right.
  3. Read the point sizes off the result and write those into the spec.
  4. Record which two faces the numbers were derived from.

Step four is the one that gets skipped, and the one that makes the spec survive contact with anybody else. A type scale without the typefaces named beside it is a set of numbers that happened to work once.

Try this today

Take a layout you have already built. Change the body face to one with a noticeably different x-height, leave every number as it is, and look at the headline. If the hierarchy moved, it was never in the numbers. It was in the pair.

Point size is a container, and a container tells you nothing about what somebody put inside it. Choosing a typeface is a decision about apparent scale, made before you type a number. That decision is the work. The number is just where you wrote it down.
